KERN RIVER back to the beginning
| The Kern
River with a gradient of 30 feet per mile,
the Kern is one of the steepest and wildest rivers in North America. Hosting
wildlife and beautiful flowers along it’s shores, it’s cozy campgrounds
nestle between the pine trees and peace and quiet can still be found. The
river is divided into four sections; Lower-below Isabella Dam, Upper Kern
from Johnsondale Bridge to Riverkern Beach, the Forks of the Kern beginning
45 miles north of Kernville and the South fork Isabella Lake feed.
Mountain Bike Trails at Kern. DIRECTIONS: Take Hwy 405 north (signs will say "Sacramento"). At the north end of the San Fernando Valley, it will merge with Hwy 5. Take Hwy 5 north to the San Joaquin Valley (signs still say "Sacramento"). where it SPLITS into two Highways: Hwy 5 and Hwy 99. Take Hwy 99 - Bakersfield. There is a sign for the Hwy 178 turnoff (want to go east). LAX to Bakersfield is approximately 2 hours. Camping,
